At best count, an amazing 41 classic and late model Mopars turned out for the 3rd Annual River Oaks Chrysler Plymouth Jeep on Saturday, June 20, 1998. If you wanted to see a great variety of Mopars, then this was the place to be. The amazing variety included, to name a few; a Hemi T-Bucket, a 39 Plymouth Convertible, a 59 Belvedere, 61 Dart, 64 Dart GT, a pair of 63 Polaras, a pair of 64 Belvederes, an early 70s model Duster and a 90s model V-6 Duster, a 67 Coronet R/T, a 68 Coronet, a 68 GTX, a 68 Sport Fury, a 69 Roadrunner, a 72 Polara, a 79 Cordoba, a pair of Aspens, 2 AMC Javelins, a 98 Dakota R/T, as well as Chargers, a Challenger and a Cuda. The latest model Mopar had to be the screaming yellow, 99 Prowler, which was on display out front.

The temperatures soared to over 100°, but the the spectators and displayers didn't seem to mind, probably because River Oaks CPJ was kind enough to supply tamales and ice-cold 7-UP to cool them down. Mysteriously, a crowd developed near the entrance of the dealership for a good reason, the opening door vented out really cold air. The crowd tried to stay indoors, but it was just too cold to stay inside, so a spot in-between was the perfect solution. Seeing everyone gather here, Gary Quay decided to use this as the place to hand out trophies. Mike Fontenot's blue 67 Coronet R/T won Dealerships Choice Award (for the second time in a row), the Hemi T-bucket won Best Non-Member vehicle, and a purple 70 Cuda won Judges Choice Award. A huge THANKS goes to River Oaks CPJ, who supplied several door prizes, and to Gary Quay, who gave these away to the lucky ticket holders. Afterwards, the crowd dispersed and went their separate ways, hopefully to join again at at future show & shine.

The success of this annual show seems to be due to the fact of its central Houston location and the advertisements that River Oaks put in the Houston Chronicle. I had talked to some of the people that I did not recognize, and that is where they heard about the show. The club members heard about it through the newsletter and all-in-all, the publicity produced a huge turnout. I think it is safe to say that all those in attendance enjoyed themselves, and are ready to do it again next year if River Oaks CPJ is willing.
